Integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) planning and implementation

IRS activities are conducted annually in Zambia to support malaria control activities. These activities routinely include district-level planning and budgeting for targeted areas, assessment of spray structures (to determine formal, informal and overall structure counts as well as volumes of insecticides needed), training of spray teams, IRS campaigns, and supervision and monitoring of spray activities. Several post-campaign activities also take place, including reporting on and attending the annual post-spray campaign national meeting of all 15 IRS districts to share experiences and lessons learned.

In 2007, the National Malaria Control Programme, with the support of partners, a series of activities for strengthening the information used to plan and implement IRS activities at district level.  A plan was developed to train the 15 IRS districts on the use of PDAs and GIS for enumeration of households and mapping of the 15 districts, and then carry out, through district coordination, the systematic enumeration of targeted spray areas.

The following reports outline the process of integrating GIS into the enumeration of targeted spray areas. These efforts will continue to be strengthened to support more informed evidence base for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of  IRS activities for Zambia.
